How would I go about painting an old bench?
I purchased an old antique bench made out of wood. It is a dark red color and this is my first time painting furniture. I would like to paint it a light green color. I don’t want to paint over the red but I don’t know how to strip the paint off. Any ideas?
No need to strip. Sand until reasonably smooth, prime, and paint. Use interior paint for inside, or exterior paint for outside.

If you are going to strip the paint, go to Lowes or Home Depot. Talk to the associates there, they will guide you about your choices of stripper. For me, stripping is a messy, tedious chore. I would say that unless you just want to go to bare wood, follow what is below.
Scrape off any loose paint you can with a putty knife or paint scraper.
Lightly sand the entire bench after scraping.
Paint the entire bench with two coats of primer/sealer. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second.
If the bench is going to stay inside, you could use a gloss latex paint. If it is going to be outside, I would use a a gloss enamel. Again, two coats would be good. With either type of paint, do not use too much at a time. It will run. A couple of thin coats are better than one thick one.
Be patient. Take your time. You will be surprised at how well you can make the bench look.
Good Luck.
